5 reasons to upgrade your locks, windows and doors

5 reasons to upgrade your locks, windows and doors

1. Insurance, 2. Energy efficiency, 3. Look and appeal of the house, 4. House value, 5. Security

Of course, budget is important, we all want to ‘save money’ and only want to carry out work on a property when necessary. But trying to save money may actually cost money; when changing the odd window or door in your home. However, the savings you make may not be apparent until after you’ve gone through the process of upgrading all your windows and doors, here’s why:

InsuranceAre your locks in compliance with your home insurance policy? Many people over look this key reason for upgrading your windows, doors or locks. This is true for home and business. We supply anti-snap locks on external doors. We provide a choice of multi-locking mechanisms for windows as well as doors. Plus a choice of security hinges too, there are levels of security you can choose from. Our products and service is beyond a ‘standard offering’ we offer a security upgrade on our window locking mechanisms which are then secure by design – a police standard. It’s surprising; but many people aren’t aware that the level of protection offered by your window and door locks need to meet the requirements of your insurer. Failure to meet these requirements could mean that the insurance policy is invalid and result in any claims being rejected.

Energy efficiency – Did you know the windows and doors can be energy rated just like other items in your home? If your windows are misted up, it’s likely they have lost some of their efficient properties, not only obstructing your view but potentially losing heat too! Technology is constantly moving forward and your double glazed windows also benefit from technological advancement. If you have old uPVC windows, new ones will benefit from updated glass and frames. You also have a choice of glass. For example Low Emissivity (Low-e) coated glass, lets the light and heat in; and retains the heat from the inside, excellent for energy efficiency! The gap between the double glazed panels is filled with an invisible gas or air and an air tight seal makes it work effectively. If a seal has perished, which will happen over time, the gap between the glazed panels is exposed to external conditions and is no longer efficient. Doors need to be maintained too; the seals and fitting correctly into the frame is key to efficiency as well as the materials and construction. All our windows are A rated for energy efficiency. All our double glazed units are A rated, argon filled with K glass

The ‘look’ of your home – Time can be cruel, sadly nothing lasts forever and without the right level of maintenance your home will decay just as  anything which has been neglected. A ‘cared for’ home is far more appealing than one that’s been left unattended. Changing your windows and doors can have a dramatic effect on the look of your home – here’s a recent example:

House Value – Whether you’re putting your house up for sale or just want to optimise its value, your windows and doors can influence the value of your home, by an increase of around 10% and it will make it more saleable by improving the appeal!

Security – Another point when choosing your windows and doors is security. A primary point of access may be your windows, so make sure you choose windows suitable for your situation. Your choice of frame and glass should be considered per window; fitting toughened glass in more vulnerable areas too. Also fit window locks and police approved anti-snap external door locks. (See insurance notes above)

Why are composite doors such a good choice for your property entrance?

There are many reasons why your choice of new front or back door is an important decision.

Of course, security features and how it looks is key, but not all doors are the same. We’re not just referring to what you see, but how it’s constructed too.

Improve security and heat efficiency with a new composite door

Improve security and heat efficiency with a new composite door

If you’re looking for a good quality door at a good price; then John will give you all the advice you need to suit not only the style of your property; but your budget too!

We have a full range of composite doors to choose from. All use the latest construction technology promoting excellent energy efficient properties. Upvc doors and composite doors are both a good choice in terms of security features. They both have similar properties and are both a perfectly good choice, but composite doors have a few extra reasons to be considered…

So what’s the difference between upvc and composite doors?
The difference between the two is down to the materials and structure. Composite doors are made from ‘composite’ materials, hence the name. They are constructed slightly differently, which makes the structure of the door extremely robust. This is reflected in the price; which is generally slightly higher than a standard upvc door. Composite doors are available in a full range of colours. The finish has a textured wood appearance. Any required glass sections have a choice of glass designs available, using toughened, triple or double glazing – the choice is yours!

Apart from it looking good and making your property more energy efficient, your entrance will be more secure and attractive

Having a well fitted, good quality door can improve energy efficiency in any home or office. Upvc and composite doors are virtually maintenance free. The construction of a composite door is stronger and more hard-wearing than traditional wooden or standard upvc doors, which makes them an attractive choice.

*Save you time and money; as each door is made using maintenance free technology materials

*Look absolutely stunning with the wood grain finish available in a variety of colours

The beauty of a Stable Door

Homeowners choose a Stable Door to suit how they live!

During the summer months it’s great to have the doors and windows open and let the fresh air in!

A stable door is an ideal choice for homeowners when you need the benefits of a window and the security of a door. Keeping the pets and children safely inside while opening the top section for superb ventilation.

Stable-Door-for-swifts

Composite Stable door especially for the returning swifts after migration

Our customers like their Stable doors for a variety of reasons – “they’re quirky and look great!”

But our favourite reason so far this year is “We want a stable door so we can leave the top section open to welcome back the Swifts following migration” This was in an out building way up on the moors!

We offer external stable doors in both UPVC and Composite door materials, in a combination of made to measure styles and choice of colours to suit your property.

Whatever your reason for choosing one of our Stable doors; rest assured all our doors are guaranteed and will be the highest quality with security features fitted as standard!

Are stable doors as secure as a regular UPVC door or composite door?

Yes, they are! Even though they are constructed in two opening panels, our stable doors are fitted with a multi locking point mechanism for reliable security.

UPVC and composite stable doors differ slightly in construction.

Top or bottom doors can be locked independently. However, when leaving the property and locking from the outside the UPVC door section will usually be locked by reaching inside, then locking the outside with one key. Whereas the composite door has the option to close and lock the door top or bottom independently or as ‘one complete door’.

Are stable doors energy efficient?Stable-doors-before-and-after 2

Yes they are, but we recommend a thermal upgrade on any glass sections you want to include in your design. Otherwise they are exactly the same as a regular UPVC and Composite doors

What colours are available?

We offer a full range of colour choices in both UPVC and Composite door styles. The standard colour is white and prices vary on other available colours

We think a new UPVC or Composite Stable Door adds style and convenience to any home, whether on a hill top farm or a terrace street – they look stunning!

What makes your choice of upvc windows so important?

Not all upvc windows are the same!

Did you know the windows in your home can be energy rated just like other items in your home?Gallery-window-round-and-oblong

You can buy on ‘price’ alone or you have a choice of styles, materials, profiles and types of glass, all affecting energy efficiency,  security and ‘look’ of your home.

Here at Reliable Windows we supply new, replacement UPVC windows and have a full range for you to choose from, supplying and fitting throughout West Yorkshire

Call us for a brochure or to discuss your requirements

We also carry out maintenance tasks to help your current windows last longer and be as efficient as they can be.

Maintaining your current windows

It’s not always necessary to change your entire windows if the frame is sound, it may just mean you need a little maintenance.

So what do you look out for?

  • Do the windows open easily and smoothly without snagging?
  • Have you noticed any draughts from the glass or frame?
  • Can you see any uneven rubber trim around the edges of the glass or frame?
  • Are the glass panels clear, free of internal condensation and mould between the double glazing?
  • Are any of the glass panels cracked?
  • Do you have good security with quality window locks fitted?
  • Are the opening handles in good working order with secure locking mechanism?

Misted up windows can  effect energy efficiency in your home

Don’t worry, very often it is only the seal in the double glazed unit or a fractured glass pane rather than the entire window that has deteriorated. Sadly double glazed windows don’t last forever!

How do I know my double glazed unit may be perished?

Blown double glazed panel

Blown double glazed panel

A tell-tale sign of a blown window seal is condensation. This is visible between the glass panels, obscuring your view. There may also be visible mould, noise from outside which seems louder than in the past. To cut noise you can also use double or triple glazing units which also improve insulation.

The important thing for your home is temperature regulation and ventilation, achieved via well fitted functional windows. Here at Reliable Windows we carry out window and door maintenance checks throughout West Yorkshire and Lancashire borders; including Halifax, Huddersfield and Rochdale areas, to ensure windows and doors open smoothly and close efficiently and double glazed panels are efficient.

If your windows are misted up, it’s likely they have lost some of their efficient properties, not only obstructing your view but potentially losing heat too!

Technological advancements

Technology is constantly moving forward and your double glazed windows also benefit from technological advancement. If your windows are old uPVC windows, they will benefit from updated glass and frames. Not all windows are the same; they come in a variety of qualities and standards.

What kind of glass will I need?

Bathroom windows have a full choice of glass patterns and obscurity for your privacy

Not always apparent by just looking at it, but the type of glass chosen has different energy properties. You have a choice of glass. For example Low Emissivity (Low-e) coated glass, lets the light and heat in; and retains the heat from the inside, excellent for energy efficiency!

The glass absorbs the heat and acts as a barrier to the cold. The gap between the glazed panels should be wide enough to activate the efficiency properties. The gap between the double glazed panels is filled with an invisible gas or air and an air tight seal makes it work effectively. If a seal has perished, which will happen over time, the gap between the glazed panels is exposed to external conditions and is no longer efficient.

For more information on energy saving please visit the Energy Saving Trust website where you’ll find tables and standards.

Security

A primary point of access may be your windows, so make sure you choose windows suitable for your situation. Your choice of frame and glass should be considered per window; fitting toughened glass in more vulnerable areas.

Are your patio doors secure and in good working order?

Summer’s here, throw open the patio doors and let the fresh air and sunshine in!

If you’re planning a patio party or simply enjoying a bit of summer sunshine, now is a good time to check out those patio doors to make sure they are in good working order!

Long periods of time unopened can cause snags due to deterioration and like everything else in your home; maintenance is essential for efficient working patio doors.

It’s also a good time to review your situation and make sure you’re doing all you can to keep your property secure.

Here’s what to look for when checking your Patio Doors:Gallery-Patio-doors

Is it time for you to upgrade patio doors? – We have a full range to choose from.

Now check for security:

Gallery-Patio-french-doorsDo your doors need updating? Do the doors open outwards, inwards or sliding?

Old style doors have been upgraded with new designs offering more security features

Can the doors be lifted out of the frame? This is an old way of fitting patio doors, which has since proved to be a security threat. We would suggest new replacement doors in this instance.

The fitting design style is a key function and it’s certainly something a potential intruder will be looking for!

What kind of glass is fitted? We recommend toughened glass for all windows in vulnerable areas. However, for patio or French doors we recommend toughened glass simply for normal family safety and added security.

Not always apparent by just looking at it, but the type of glass chosen has different energy properties. For example; if you choose energy efficient glazing, this incorporates coated (low-emissivity) glass to prevent heat escaping through the windows.

What kind of handles and locking mechanism is present?

We recommend your patio doors have anti-snap locks, security handles and fitted with hinge bolts
